LET THE TIRE WAR BEGIN Posted on 11/5/2009 at 03:12:12 PM by Kevin Ruic
It appears that the shoot out at the OK Corral is about to be re-enacted at your local dirt track.
There have been some things going on lately that you might want to know about.
Rather than act like a ‘Know It All’ let me just give you some facts and let you figure it out yourselves.
Fremont Speedway just re-upped their agreement with Hoosier until 2012.
Attica has just followed suit and pledged their allegiance to the same.
The World of Outlaws has just switched to Goodyear in what is reported to be a high dollar deal. Remember that the company that owns the WoO has not had a very good fiscal record of late and may have needed the Goodyear sponsorship money.
The All-Star Series is reported to have followed the money and gone over to Goodyear as well.
Both Fremont and Attica host WoO and All-Star events.
I’m sure you can see where this is going.
Let me paint another scenario for you to chew on.
Eldora is owned by Tony Stewart who not only runs the WoO and the All Stars events but has a very close personal tie with the folks at Hoosier.
Irish Saunders, Hoosier high muckity muck executive, has a son who is very much involved with motocross and is on the verge of turning pro. The word on the street is that the money behind the Saunders motocross team comes from Stewart who has always been extremely loyal to Hoosier. What are the odds he’s going to switch to Goodyear? You got that one right!
Let’s look into auto racing’s crystal ball and pretend we can see into the future. There are very few real traveling drivers left that follow the WoO circuit. Most of the participants show up when the race is in their area. Tony Stewart is a major draw with his #20. Casey Kahne is another draw with his #9 that goes where Tony goes. The big fan draw is always Steve Kinser in the #11 and I’m betting he will lean the way Tony leans.
What does all this mean you ask? If my opinion counts for anything it means there will be a brand new 410 Dirt Series coming to a track near you in the very near future featuring Stewart, Kahne and Kinser as headliners with just gobs of cash from Hoosier and tons of racers that want to race with the best of the best. Accepting the Goodyear money may have put a band-aid on some immediate (point funds) financial problems for the sanctioning bodies but in the long run it will kill them. With Larry Kemp, Larry Boos and some other talented folks working for him, Tony Stewart will have no problem putting together a quality traveling show that may just close the competition. Only time will tell.
